How to contact Melanie:
After acting as an informal birth companion to friends and family for years, in 2017 I took the next step and trained as an NCT licensed doula. I have experience of many different kinds of births, from home water birth to emergency caesarean and many in between, and feel strongly that even challenging labour and birth situations can be made beautiful and fulfilling, with the right support. I am very accepting and non-judgemental, and have experience working with LGBTQ+ couples. I am committed to helping you work with your medical practitioners to achieve the birth that is right for you. I am also open to attending free births.
Through my own birth experiences (an emergency caesarean, a planned caesarean, and a home water birth) and the births I have attended, I am constantly amazed by the intricacy of the human body, and how well and how delicately nature contrives what’s best for us and our babies, when we give it a chance. My goal is to ensure this perfect choreography, this dance of the hormones, which enables birth to proceed optimally, is protected and preserved. To do that, I offer knowledgeable and steadfast support – emotional, physical, interpersonal, and practical. My job is to free you to do your job, the most important job there is, of birthing new life into the world.
I believe in the wisdom of women’s bodies, and our ability to do this everyday miracle of giving birth. While my own understanding of birth is deepened by a background in science and an evidence-based approach, my primary aim is to make sure that all parents are warmly supported in having the birth experience that they want, whatever and wherever that might be.
I seek always to complement and support, not usurp, the role of partners/fathers/co-parents, and to work productively with your health care professionals. Above all, I seek to provide the information, help and support you need, when and how you need it, to help you have the birth you want.
American born, I have lived in Colchester since 1995. When I’m not attending births, I like to hang out with my five mostly grown kids/stepkids and hugely supportive husband, and our labradoodle Morgan – walking, reading, cooking, playing guitar, writing poetry and travelling to places with sunshine.
I hold a full and current Licence to Practise from the National Childbirth Trust (NCT)
I have a DipHb(KG) diploma in hypnobirthing from KG Hypnobirthing™.
I have been certified as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter under the Baby Friendly Initiative, at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust.
I am DBS checked.
I speak Spanish and rudimentary German.
I also have a BA(Hons) and MA in Archaeology from a previous career, and more than 20 years’ experience in social science data research.
I will provide support by:
· Meeting with you during pregnancy for 3 preparation sessions
· Being available at the end of the phone/text/email throughout pregnancy
· Being with you for as long as you wish during labour and birth, both at home and moving with you to hospital/birth centre if that is your choice
· Staying with you for a short time after birth, offering peer support for initiation of breastfeeding, if that is wanted
· A final follow-up / debrief session some days/weeks later, if you find it helpful
“Melanie was the first doula we interviewed… and the only one. From the moment “go” we felt incredibly reassured by all her knowledge, her positive energy, her confidence and her passion for what she does. My labour was induced early and at short notice, and I had done no research on the subject thinking that only happened if you went overdue. Melanie was incredible throughout, giving us options where we would’ve otherwise felt like we had none, teaching my partner pain relief techniques and overall going out of her way to help me have the straightforward labour I wanted -in spite of the induction. I think practicing hypnobirthing (of which Melanie is also a qualified instructor) and her presence were the two most important resources I had during my baby’s beautiful and calm birth. Will no doubt reach out to her when it’s time for our second!” Ana, mother of Leo
“I was afraid and did not know what to expect as this was my first birth. From the beginning, I truly felt like Melanie would make this easier for me because of her compassion and ability to be encouraging and kind, yet strong and knowledgeable. I felt, during my labour, that I was in the presence of an expert. Melanie’s personality is and always has been kind, thoughtful, strong and understanding of how many moving parts there are to childbirth, from the fear to the need of encouragement at the right moments to knowing when to relax and wait and when to cheer you on towards the end. Melanie’s presence at the birth of my son changed my birthing experience for the better and I’ll always be thankful that she shared this sacred experience with me.” Serena, mother of Tanner
“Melanie was a great support in the hospital during a very long labour that ended with an epidural, but was otherwise without medical intervention. And what a relief to have her with me after the birth to support me in my new role as mother! Melanie also attended the home birth of my second child, only this time it was my wife who was labouring. During that labour Melanie was efficiently and quietly there in the background, supporting us in myriad ways. When I could no longer be an effective birth partner without a nap, Melanie stepped in to support my wife during what turned out to be transition. Melanie is a calm presence and a source of strength. She remains aware of the emotional needs of the rest of the family, even as she centers her attention on the labouring woman. I am profoundly grateful to have had her with me for the births of my children.” Beth, mother of Micah and Käthe
“I trusted Melanie completely — to respect what my wishes were, to help me do what I wanted to do (have this baby at home), but also to provide great guidance if I wasn’t sure about what to do next. Her manner is open and loving, while at the same time, Melanie knows her stuff! Melanie did not shy away from anything that might have made others uncomfortable. She was there for us — whatever happened, whatever needed to happen. Her compassion, combined with her quick mind and complete loveliness as a person really made Melanie the first person we wanted to call when labour began. Anyone who has Melanie on a birthing team is a very lucky person indeed. “ Julie, mother of Micah and Käthe.
